When most people think of spending a Saturday morning in Derby, scaling down the side of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But for our CEO Katy Upton and Finance Manager Sharon Edwards, abseiling down the historic Derby Cathedral was exactly how they chose to spend their weekend — all in the name of charity.
Their mission? To raise vital funds for Rainbows Children’s Hospice, a remarkable organisation that provides care and support for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, as well as their families.
And raise funds they did — both Katy and Sharon successfully raised over £700, but the achievement goes far beyond the numbers; it’s a story of teamwork, courage, and compassion.
When Katy and Sharon first heard about the Rainbows Abseil Challenge, they didn’t hesitate for long. The event invited brave volunteers to scale the 212-foot tower of Derby Cathedral, taking in incredible city views before descending the ancient stone walls under the guidance of trained professionals.
“It sounded terrifying,” laughs Sharon, “but it was one of those challenges that you know you just have to say yes to. Rainbows is such an inspiring charity — and the thought of helping even a little bit made the nerves worth it.”
For Katy, the decision to take part was about leading by example. “As a business, we always talk about being part of our community and giving back. It’s easy to say that, but it’s even better when we can live it. I wanted to do something that pushed me out of my comfort zone, and this was the perfect opportunity.”
Neither Katy nor Sharon are regular climbers or adrenaline junkies (well, maybe Katy is), but both share a deep commitment to community causes. After a few weeks of fundraising, encouragement from colleagues, and plenty of pep talks, they found themselves at the base of the cathedral — helmets on, hearts racing, and ready to take the plunge.
Derby Cathedral is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Standing tall above the skyline, its tower offers panoramic views across the city and beyond. But for those preparing to abseil down, that same height takes on a very different meaning.
“The first moment when you step backwards and realise how high up you are — that’s when it hits you,” says Katy. “You have to really trust your equipment, your instructor, and yourself. Once you get going, though, it’s actually amazing. You can see the whole of Derby spread out beneath you, and there’s this huge sense of calm — and pride — as you descend.”
Sharon agrees. “It’s one of the most surreal experiences I’ve ever had. I was terrified at the start, but halfway down I actually started to enjoy it. The cheers from the crowd below were such a boost — you could feel the community spirit in the air.”
Both Katy and Sharon were met with applause from supporters, colleagues, friends, and family waiting at the bottom. For many watching, it was a moment that captured what community-driven leadership really looks like — setting an example through action and courage.
Rainbows Children’s Hospice holds a special place in the hearts of many across the East Midlands. The charity offers specialist care and emotional support to children and young people with life-limiting and terminal conditions, ensuring they and their families receive the compassion, respite, and dignity they deserve.
Since opening in 1994, Rainbows has become a beacon of hope for families facing unimaginable challenges. The hospice provides not only medical care but also counselling, therapy, and moments of joy and normality for children and their loved ones.
“The work Rainbows does is nothing short of extraordinary,” says Katy. “It’s about giving families precious time together and ensuring every child can live their life to the fullest. That’s something that resonates with everyone.”
The funds raised from events like the Derby Cathedral abseil help Rainbows continue to provide these vital services — funding nursing staff, therapy sessions, and family support initiatives that make an immeasurable difference.
Throughout the fundraising journey, the sense of support from colleagues was overwhelming. The team rallied around Katy and Sharon, sponsoring their efforts, sharing their fundraising pages, and offering words of encouragement.
“We’ve always believed that community involvement is part of who we are as a business,” says Sharon. “This challenge really brought that to life. Every message, every donation — it all added up to make the experience even more meaningful.”
In the office, a friendly rivalry even developed over who could raise the most money first, though both were delighted to see their combined total climb steadily. By the time they reached the top of the cathedral tower, their fundraising goals had already been surpassed — a testament to the generosity and spirit of everyone involved.
Looking back, both Katy and Sharon agree that the experience was unforgettable — not just for the thrill of the abseil itself, but for what it represented.
“It reminded me that great things happen when you step outside your comfort zone,” says Katy. “It’s not just about facing fears; it’s about doing something that matters. I’d encourage anyone who gets the chance to take part in something like this — it’s so rewarding.”
For Sharon, the day was about connection. “You could feel the community coming together — people of all ages, all backgrounds, all cheering for a common cause. It was really special.”
We want to say an enormous thank you to everyone who supported Katy and Sharon — whether you donated, shared their story, or came along to cheer them on. Your kindness and encouragement helped make this challenge such a success.
And of course, the biggest thanks go to Rainbows Children’s Hospice for the incredible work they do every single day. We’re proud to support your mission and to have played a small part in helping it continue.
