Data Centre Decommissioning for Tier 1 Financial Institution

  • Geography: United States
  • Scope: Branch and Tower Locations Nationwide
  • Focus Areas: IT Asset Disposal (ITAD), Data Centre Teardown, Onsite Drive Destruction,
    Environmental Impact Mitigation

Project Overview

Following a major acquisition, a Tier 1 financial institution significantly expanded its U.S. footprint—gaining over 1.8 million new customers and more than 500 additional branches, including commercial and wealth offices. This rapid expansion created an urgent need to streamline and consolidate legacy IT infrastructure across newly acquired sites.

To support this effort, the bank engaged our award-winning ITAD (IT Asset Disposal) program. Our team was tasked with decommissioning data centres, securely destroying server hard drives, and collecting obsolete technology assets from multiple branch and tower locations across the country.

Project Objectives

The goal of the project was to ensure a secure, efficient, and environmentally responsible shutdown of legacy data infrastructure across the newly acquired network. This included the physical teardown of data centre environments, secure on-site destruction of sensitive data, and recycling or repurposing of all collected technology assets to maximise value recovery and environmental impact reduction.

Execution and Outcomes

The project successfully delivered comprehensive decommissioning across five tower sites and two full data centre environments. In total, 17,257 hard drives were shredded onsite, ensuring complete data destruction in line with the strictest compliance requirements.

A total of 23,572 devices were processed throughout the engagement, with an impressive 88% of assets successfully repurposed. This approach not only reduced environmental waste but also supported the bank’s sustainability objectives.

In terms of environmental contribution, the project generated 6,938 carbon credits for the bank. These credits equate to:

  • Over 17.7 million miles driven by an average gasoline-powered vehicle
  • Annual electricity consumption of more than 1,369 homes
  • Annual electricity consumption of more than 1,369 homes
  • Additionally, more than 595,000 pounds of eWaste were responsibly recycled. For scale, that’s equivalent to the weight of 15 Greyhound buses—exceeding even the total weight of a fully loaded jumbo jet or the Statue of Liberty by over 150,000 pounds.

Client Impact

This large-scale decommissioning project enabled the bank to meet critical post-acquisition integration milestones, retire obsolete infrastructure securely, and reinforce its commitment to sustainability. By partnering with a provider equipped to manage both technical and environmental dimensions, the institution was able to execute a seamless transition while generating measurable environmental benefits.
